How And Why Is Turf Management Done?

What is turf management?

Turf management refers to taking care of the ground, pitch or field. Turf management skills require cleanliness and sports knowledge.

The process may involve –

  • Mowing – The process of mowing involves cutting and shaping the grass as it adds up to the appearance of the pitch and makes it look cleaner.Scarification – It refers to the weakening and altering of seeds it may be done by chemical, thermal or mechanical aid.
  • Rolling – rolling is done to even out and smoothen the surface of the ground it helps to fill depressions and even out the bulged surface or ground. It can be done with the help of a lawn roller. Excessive rolling shouldn’t be done as it may compact and compress the grass.
  • Aeration – As the name suggests this process is done to let the ground breathe it opens up the roots so that it allows oxygen in the deep root zones.

Benefits of turf management –

  • Prevents soil erosion – Soil erosion harms and hampers landforms and it wears away the topsoil and results in crop failure and also weakens the soil and doesn’t let the soil remain intact. Soil erosion may be of four types – gully, splash, sheet, and rill erosion. Turf management helps to overcome and avoid soil erosion as it concentrates on taking care of the topsoil.
  • Air replenishment – air replenishment helps to deliver fresh air to the firefighters. The turf management system helps to reduce pollen and helps to make the air fresher.

The turf management helps to smoothen any game so that it can be played without any hurdle. Smooth gameplay requires appropriate sports amenities and a good playing area, pitch, or ground.

What if the ground is not maintained?

An improper ground has a lot of disadvantages it may cause injuries to the sportsperson. If the ground is not maintained and taken care of regularly it can become dead and destroyed to an extent that it may not be possible to recover it as before. So to avoid this heavy loss a little expense in the maintenance is worth it.

A bad ground is good for nothing. Forget about playing and practicing you cannot even sit and spend time in such a place as it may be prone to wild plants and insects.
